International Children's Burn Rehabilitaiton Center

Children, as a group, are at an increased risk for burn injuries. A large percentage of children suffering from burn injuries come from economically disadvantaged families, and after children from such families are injured, their parents are often forced to give up treatment due to their inability to afford high medical fees. Frequently, this means giving up on the child's life. During the last few years of rescue work, AngelMom has met many unfortunate children with burn injuries, as well as their near-despairing families. Through persistent hard work, many of these children's lives have been saved, and the qualities of their future lives have been improved.

AngelMom's group of volunteers intends to make use of all medical resources within their reach to the fullest extent, and to help more children suffering from burn injuries with greater efficiency. To this end, AngelMom, after bold conceptual planning and much hard preparation work, and in cooperation with the Chinese PLA Air Force General Hospital, founded in September 2009 the first burn rehabilitation in China geared purely toward children--the International Children's Burn Rehabilitation Center.

The center is located on the 4th floor of the West Wing of the PLA Air Force General Hospital. There are 11 inpatient wards as well as a 300-square-meter recovery room. The nationally-renowned Dr. Cao Weihong and his 15-member team have become the backbone of the facility.

The International Children’s Burn Center states its missions as follow:

  1. Follow the spirit of charity relief.
  2. Introduce traditional Chinese medicine techniques to burn rehabilitation.
  3. Fill the vacancy for a children’s burn rehabilitation facility in China.
  4. Introduce humanized treatments such as psychological rehabilitation methods.
  5. Strengthen both national and international communications in the areas of medical information and technologies.

Currently, over 20 children from disadvantaged families are receiving treatments that combine western and traditional Chinese medical methods, as well as physical therapy and rehabilitation, at the center. Recently, AngelMom has also planned a major performance and charity auction event. In addition to publicizing the center's highly meaningful work, the event will promote public knowledge about ^ prevention and emergency treatment of burn injuries through the distribution of pamphlets and handbooks, toward the goal of raising community awareness in this area.

In January 2010, a medical team consisting of burn and hand surgeons, physical therapists and nurses from Shriners Hospital in Boston, MGH and Northeastern University will be visiting the center to perform surgeries and to engage in research exchange. Dr. Cao, the center's medical director, strongly hopes to increase professional communications with international colleagues possessing advanced burn injury treatment and rehabilitation methods and technologies. He sincerely welcomes international burn injury experts to visit the center in order to help direct its work.

OSCCF believes that the founding of the burn center is a milestone in the development of AngelMom as a grass-roots charity organization. It signifies the importance on the part of AngelMom toward solidifying its rescue work, both procedurally and materially, and a great qualitative leap forward in its ability to perform that work. Being proud of its closest partner organization, OSCCF will increase its efforts to raise the necessary medical funds for the disadvantaged young patients being helped by the burn center. On behalf of the center, it also seeks greater communication and cooperation opportunities with international burn experts and organizations.
